Because I enjoyed our camping trip to Namibia in 2007 very much, we decided to visit South Africa and together with my parents we planned a self drive trip with a 4×4 Toyota with 2 roof tents. As South Africa is quite a big country and we only had 3 weeks of vacation we had to make choices and as we prefer the less touristic ways our plan was to start in Capetown and follow the west coast to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Also the Garden Route seemed to be quite beautiful, that´s why we continued from North West through the Great Karoo to Port Elizabeth to visit Addo Elephant National Park and from there go back along the Garden Route to Capetown.

With KLM we flew from Amsterdam to Capetown where we arrived late in the evening. We had pre booked a B&B close to the airport and stayed our first night in Nupen Manor Bed and Breakfast. The owner Michelle had organized a transfer for us and the next morning we went back to the airport to pick up our rental car – a Britz Safari 4. Driving on the left side wasn’t something new for us and after a short while we got used to it again. After a stop at the gas station and a big supermarket where we filled up the car with gasoline and food for the next days we left Capetown for our first destination – the West Coast National Park.
