When people told me in the past they are going to the south of France…I always thought it must be the Cote d’Azur. From the Abbaye Notre Dame we took the Peage again which was still a pain in the ass because our electric windows were still not working and paying at the booth every now and then was a challenge.
We passed Aix en Provence and Marseille and near Toulon we hit a huge traffic jam which took us nearly 2 hours of our time. Soon we figured out that sightseeing Nice was not an option for today anymore and decided to look for a camping along the coast. For the first time this holiday we had difficulties to find a free spot on one of the hundreds campings in this region. One after the other was just full with camper and caravanning elderly who apparantly stay the winter over…but with high season not even started…we can not imagine to spend your main holiday in the south of France like this. Literally this place was piled up with caravans. One positive thing…we finally could prepare a BBQ this holiday, but next morning we were happy to leave the place which we did.

Full of plans this day we drove along the beautiful D559 along the coast. Passing by places like Saint Tropez and Frejus. Main goal was to visit Nice and Monaco for a couple of hours, but…

On our roadtrip to China journey from a couple of years ago, we met 2 friendly guys from the Basque country for 3 times. We spend a week together on a houseboat in Srinagar, India. From then on Aitor is still hitting the road with his pushbike, so it was a big surprise and coincident that he was spending some time in Bolzano – Italy before flying back to the Americas to continue his trip. Bolzano lies exactly on our way to Dresden. A better opportunity we would not get. Problem was that we had our appointment this evening. Nice to Bolzano is a sloppy 700 km driving which was just a bit of too much for us and Friday was not an option for him…because he had to work at a market in Medano…

We decided to leave Nice for another time, but Monaco must be visited. In the end we only drove through this mini country for half an hour maybe. Parking the car for a while was not an option in the world’s second smallest country. Nice and Monaco…we’ll be back…

After we visited but not experienced Monaco, we directed the car back to the freeway and headed for Italy…we had a market to visit tomorrow! Actually we were just driving through the north of Italy seeing how far we could come this day. We finished after 600 km. at the shores of Lago di Garda in Sirmione and enjoyed a well deserved pizza in an Italian restaurant.
