From Messina Sicily, we took the ferry to Villa San Giovanni, which meant we had arrived on mainland Italy in the region of Calabria. It’s a mountainous region where the Greeks left their footsteps before the roman empire took over.

We drove most of the time near the Mediterranean Sea and our first campingspot in Calabria was one of the best we had on this trip. It was not more than just a green field, but right on the shore with cristal clear blue water and with views of Stromboli in the distance. Fara Capo Vaticano.

To see as much as possible of this part of southern Italy, we drove just across the countryside avoiding main roads. We passed traditionally villages where time stood still for years and through Riserva Naturale Cropani Micone we eventually reached the SS106 which we followed north until we reached our camping which was actually closed down for winter already, but the very friendly and helpfull owner was kind enough to open up again. High season was over, but with such clear water and the sun shining, we could not resist the water for a swim.

Our next goal was to reach Alberobello, home of the Trulli houses. On our way we drove along the Ionean Sea and passed the hill village of Rocca Imperiale. We left Calabria behind us and entered the state of Basilicata and soon we arrived in Alberobello where the weather was just not suitable for camping…we made the best out of it.
The Trulli houses were build originally for storage reasons, but slowly they were rebuild to make a living out of it. Typical for this houses are the conical made roofs which are constructed without cement.

Just as every other tourist, we strolled along main street Corso Vittorio Emanuele, drunk a tasteful italian coffee and had an exact look on the Trulli trying to forget about the rain…

The last couple of days we wanted to relax near Napoli and the Amalfi penisula which we had been a couple of years ago. Just relax infront of the tent with some italian pasta and a bottle of red wine. A great spot to end this holiday. Life can be wonderful.

Unfortunately Romy got the message that her grandmother had passed away and therefore Romy flew home to Dresden one day earlier as expected. Eddy spend one more night in Napoli before flying home to Amsterdam.
