Attabad LakeOf course Eddy couldn’t be satisfied with only hanging around doing nothing for 5 days. That’s why he decided to make an overnight trip to the nearby Attabad Lake. This lake was formed only 1.5 years ago in January 2010 after a huge landslide. It is now 25 km long and up to 130 meter deep. Many villages just disappeared in the lake and also the KKH is disconnected. The lake has affected thousands of people in mostly bad ways. Many people still live in tents, school lessons have to take place in tents and in many places there is no electricity or clean running water. Prices for houses and food have increased a lot. Also freight traffic from China to Pakistan is suffering a lot because it takes much more time and money. Everything has to be unloaded on one side of the lake, been brought on a boat, been shipped 2 hours across the lake and being loaded again on a truck on the other side. Locals benefit from this in a way, because they are earning money with loading, unloading and navigating the ferry boats. It also attracts many tourists. But still the situation stays difficult and there still stays the risk of the dam breaking and flooding the Lower Hunza Valley.
