Concordia

On day 5 of our trekking we could see Masherbrum (7821 m) emerging on the right and it took our breath away and so did Gasherbrum 4 (7932 m) right in front of us. On the way we came across a local with some donkeys. One of the donkeys had slipped and fell into a crevasse with icy water. After half an hour of struggling, Yaya and some other guys managed to pull out the poor animal. It was shivering because of the cold and the shock. But the owner had no mercy, after a couple of minutes the donkey was loaded again and had to stumble down the glacier to get new food and petrol for the expeditions waiting on the mountains for climbing one of the 8000er tops. On the campsite Goro (4300 m) we had our first night sleeping on the ice and it was quite cold, about minus 7-8 degrees during night time. Our thermarest and sleeping bags kept us warm during the night.

Finally we made our approach to Concordia – also called “The Throne Room of the Mountain Gods”. We really had to walk until the very end to see K2, but there he was – 8611 meter high and just a small cloud covering a part of it. We were very happy and our porters shared some tea and bread with us while we were enjoying the views. Concordia is the place where the Baltoro Glacier and the Godwin-Austen Glacier meet and our tents were set up on 4600 meter. We were supposed to have a rest day here before starting the climb to the Gondogoro La. We disappeared in our tent to get some sleep, too tired for anything. We could not care less now, as we would have the whole next day to enjoy and taking pictures of this amazing scenery. We were also starting to feel the altitude and both got some problems with feeling sick, having no appetite and running to the toilet tent too often.
